Back to School Advice for Moms | Kingwood Moms
Hey Moms of Kinder babies or Middle Schoolers. This list is more for Kinder Mommas but I think a few on here are good for Middle School Moms as well.
*This was the most repeated suggestion  -Practice eating “school lunch” with your kiddo. Make sure they can open everything you send with them. Talk about not eating off of the table (or floor) in the lunchroom
-Set a timer for 20 minutes and talk about how they may not finish eating and that’s ok. This was HARD for some when I was teaching.
-Practice packing everything back up and talk about what is trash and what should come back home in their lunch box. -Kindergarten lunch is a big adjustment and your child’s teacher will be super appreciative if you have prepared them for the experience ahead of time. The teachers will be there to help them for the first week but after that it will be on the students to remember.
-Have kids practice wiping their own bottoms. No but seriously, teachers can’t help them.
-Practice Pulling up pants, no buttons, please. Elastic works best for Kinder.
-Zipping jackets
-Pack an extra set of clothes.
-No cute backpacks, full size, it will need to fit folders and lunch boxes.
-Encourage. You CAN do it! Just TRY first.
-Practice Sight Words
-Read 20 minutes per night
-If your child isn’t adjusting, talk to the counselor.
-Buy the supply pack
-Don’t buy fuzzy jackets- the mulch will get stuck to it.
-Encourage them. Every day!
-Prepare for exhaustion and meltdowns
-It is ok to seek help early, don’t wait until your child is struggling
-If the child is a walker practice the route they will be taking. Go over street safety. Stranger Danger.
-Show pictures of the school, schedule a tour or go to meet the teacher
-Establish a relationship and path with career counselors earlier for easier High School Planning
-Set out clothes for the week
-Join the PTO, stay in the know of what is going on at the school
-Be there for them, no matter what. Be their safe place or someone else will be.
(TRY) and spend as much time with them as you can, and if they don’t want to hang out with you, let them know you are there for them.
-Do dinner together, even after games.
