Meet A Mom: Heather Jensen- Director of Kids in Action | Kingwood Moms

What is your name and company?
Heather Jensen Co-owner of-Kids in Action
(Part of a mother-daughter duo) that owns and operates KIA

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Kingwood?
I was actually born in Aberdeen, Scotland, but I’ve lived in Kingwood since 1st grade…I’m one of those who end up coming back.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?  I have 3 kids…Hayden 14, Piper 11, and Liam, 6

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…  I actually went to grad school for counseling.

What is your go-to activity for yourself for pampering or for fun?
I love to cook, when it’s not a “Mom, what’s for dinner” type deal.  I love to exercise and go on walks…especially during COVID.  That’s my pampering right now.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?
Oh my…funniest?  Not sure.  I live and die by my daily calendar.  I’m really working on time-blocking, as I am so busy with work, I want to make sure to leave time for my family.  My husband and I tag-team constantly….I couldn’t do it without him.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the
corporate world? Please share!
My mom and I both own Kids in Action.  She started in 1988, and I came on board in 2011, when we started the after-school program.  I like to joke that I made her life more complicated.  We went from 30 or so part-time students to about 200 full-timers today.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
Our community is the absolute best.  Our families are the best.  So many of our families have stuck with us through 2 floods, and now a pandemic.  Our community has supports us, brought us food, boxes, volunteers, power washed…whatever we needed.  We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our parents, our team members and their families, our local bank (shout out to First Financial Bank), and our community.

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering,
working, etc)?  Like I said earlier, scheduling, time-blocking, but also, scheduling time to yourself.  I walk every morning, that’s my me time, my time to count my blessings and make my to-do list.  I’ve started a gratitude journal that I write in every morning.  Times are rough right now, but there is always something to be thankful for.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?
That your life is about to get so much better.  Being a mom is the best thing I’ve ever done, and the coolest job you’ll ever have.

What is your proudest mommy moment?
I’m not sure…I’m so darn proud of my kids all the time.  They are turning into such great human beings.

Greatest gift about being a mom?
Everything.  I don’t take anything for granted.  I feel like COVID has brought us closer together as a family, and being able to share my kids with my mom, brings us all so much joy.

Best mom hack that makes momming easier?
A supportive husband.  I couldn’t do it without him.  Props to all the single moms out there.  That would be a lot to handle….at least I know my 3 wouldn’t be able to do any extracurriculars, that’s for sure.

What’s your favorite part about what you do?
There’s so much.  We have the best team at Kids in Action.  I absolutely love watching them grow.  I also adore watching our kids at work grow.  We get some as infants, and they’ll stay with us for years and years until they age out.  It’s so rewarding.  I adore so many of our KIA families.

What is your favorite thing to do in the HKA area?
We love to eat at local places.  We love visiting the local breweries, like Megaton and BackPew.  We have a very outdoorsy family too…so exploring the greenbelts, East End Park, riding our bikes up to get ice cream.
