I am SO excited to introduce Sarah and Wesley to you.
Sarah and Wesley met while teaching (maybe that is why I love them and what they are doing because I used to be a teacher).
These two moms, local to Houston, created Literacy Enrichment and Play-LEAP, five a half years ago. They created a play-based multi-sensory literacy curriculum. “We recognize that children learn best when they are provided with multi-sensory techniques and creative play”.

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Houston area?

Wesley: I am originally from New Orleans, and I moved to Houston in 2007 after I met my husband. I currently live in West Houston just outside of the Memorial area.

Sarah: I was born and raised in West University. I met my husband at West University Elementary! I currently live in Meyerland.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

Wesley: I have two boys and a girl…Charlie (7), Lucy (5), and Wyatt (3)

Sarah: I have three girls…Emily (12), Lois (10), and Ruby (6)

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

Wesley and Sarah: We met teaching third grade at Annunciation Orthodox School, became fast friends, and then later business partners. Crazy fact: We both went through graduate school while working as full-time teachers and pregnant with our first babies.

What is your go-to activity for yourself for pampering or for fun?

Wesley: I do love a good mani-pedi and a Hallmark movie.

Sarah: Reality tv is my go-to when I have a little time to myself.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

Wesley: Be on time for school by instituting “Car Breakfast”. My kids love it!

Sarah: Assign lunch duty to your husband and remember to complain when he sends “Choco Tacos” to school.

We started Literacy Enrichment and Play five a half years ago. We created a play-based multi-sensory literacy curriculum. We recognize that children learn best when they are provided with multi-sensory techniques and creative play. We aim to engage young children and build motivation and enthusiasm for learning using age-appropriate activities. We have enrichment classes, teacher trainings, a monthly subscription, and seasonal products.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
Our local Houston community has helped us grow on many levels. The schools and early childhood directors have eagerly promoted our mission. Parents have embraced our programming (we have waitlists for most of our classes). It was the parents that kept asking for advice on how they could help their children at home that led to the retail side of our business. Watching our little learners thrive in our classes and with our products keeps us excited to keep creating new and innovative content.

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering,
working, etc)?
There are no set hours when running your own business, and if you not careful you will find yourself not being present with your own little ones. Although we work from home, we do our best to set business hours, so that we can be present for our families. We are lucky that our children can be a part of LEAP and do involve them as much as possible.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

Wesley: Buy whatever you want for yourself and go on vacation.

Sarah: Sleep late and treat yourself!

What is your proudest mommy moment?

Wesley: You never get tired of hearing how well-mannered your child is.

Sarah: I agree. Hearing how my child has stuck up for someone else or sat with a child that was sitting alone definitely makes me proud to call them mine.

What is your favorite thing to do in the Houston area?

Wesley: My kids are such animal lovers that our favorite thing to do in Houston is go to the zoo. The zoo is so great because every trip can be different. You can just visit your favorite animal or a new exhibit.

Sarah: We are big park people! Houston has so many amazing family friendly parks, and we love exploring and discovering new parks.
